What I do

I am on a Path Yorkshire placement as a trainee centre officer at Getaway Girls and have been working here since 2nd October 2017.

My role is to support the day to day running and administration of Getaway Girls charity which include general office duties including tasks such as producing publicity materials using Powerpoint and Publisher, support with social media communications, help to plan meetings and events and provide general support to visitors.

I have also been given the opportunity to take further training and experience while on placement by attending a Safeguarding course and emergency first Aid course provided by Path Yorkshire.

What I did before

I have completed a BA degree in Psychology and Sociology and a postgraduate degree in Management and Law at University of Bradford.

I have previous work experience working within (BME) Black Minority Ethnic communities in the surrounding areas of Leeds. First being a Community Health Internship Volunteer, advising young people about positive sexual health in Chapeltown. Then as a Youth Play Leader, working with Romani communities and also supporting adults learning English as a second language.

A bit about Me

I am 27 years old, of Black British Caribbean origin and I have an interest in working with people within communities on a ground level so working with a third sector charity such as Getaway Girls is a fantastic opportunity, especially as I used to attend various Getaway Girls groups when I was in high school and have some great memories of my experiences.

Learning new forms of communication such as British Sign Language is a special interest of mine subsequently, I am studying Level 1 BSL (British Sign Language) and volunteer as an ESOL tutor at Path Yorkshire with Talk-English.
