Women's Lives Leeds Complex Needs Worker, Young Women
What I do
I'm the Women's Lives Needs Complex Needs Worker for Young Women, providing individual support for young women aged 13 - 18. I’m also responsible for the website and social media at Getaway Girls….so get in touch if you have news for us!
What I did before
Where do I start? I’ve worked EVERYWHERE, I've been an IT & Customer Services Trainer for a large international brewery, I've managed young people's services, I've even been a Centre Manager for a Community Arts organisation but providing intensive support for young women is where my real passion lies and I'm lucky enough to be doing that now at Getaway Girls. I’ve been supporting young people for over 13 years and don’t ever want to do anything else. My favourite EVER piece of work was working on the Changing Labels Heritage Lottery project at Getaway Girls in 2013 where I supported a group of young women researching teenage fashion over the years...it was a fantastic project and I loved every minute of it.
A bit about me
Obsessed with CrossFit (click here for more info), passionate about fashion, addicted to social media, LOVE live music and exploring the Lakes and Dales (it’s the only way I can recharge my batteries)!
Hardship Crisis Intervention Worker, Open Doors & Young Mums Worker
What I doI work on two projects at GG . Open Doors and the ‘Proud to be mum group’Open DoorsThis is a service for young women ages 16 to 25 years old. We help them during the most difficult of times and when they are experiencing a crisis situation. This might be a housing, financial or health crisis where that young women needs to have someone who can be ‘with her’ and support her through the stages of getting through that crisis. This work is fulfilling and worthwhile and I am really pleased to be part of a project that helps young women to move forward with their lives in a positive way.Proud to be mumThis is a group of young mums or young pregnant women who meet weekly to socialise, help and support one another. Young mothers aged 16 to 21yrs come together to share their experiences and have fun. Yes… they are mothers but we also realise that they are young women with aspirations, dreams and goals. We help to support them and also have many activities with and without their children, some educational and some just for Fun! We have food together ,provide a cheche and pay for transport. I really enjoy facilitating this group, it is lovely to see the children grow but just as wonderful to see the mums grow in their abilities and confidence too. What a welcoming, fun group this is.
What I did beforeMy background is that I am a Nurse, Midwife and specialist parenting advisor ( Baby Steps trainer), I am a Health Improvement specialist and have worked with young people throughout my long career. I have worked in many areas in the UK and in other countries. I have worked with many mothers from differing cultures and backgrounds.I am passionate about mothers and babies and ideally want them to be happy, healthy and for all to reach their full potential ,whatever that may be for them.
Chair of Trustees
I have been reflecting upon some of the events that Getaway Girls delivered this year. Some I attended and some I didn’t. It amazes me though that the team has the strength and passion to deliver so much in a single year. Ultimately, and most importantly the staff team have engaged with many girls & young women with such passion to make a difference when times are difficult.
It has been fantastic to see Getaway Girls profile expand across the city with our amazing projects being displayed in the Leeds Museum, White Cloth Gallery and Trinity Shopping Centre. I was ecstatic to be in the privileged position to be amongst the audience when Getaway Girls was shortlisted for Leeds Child Friendly City overall contribution Award. It was a proud moment to attend with the girls and staff to watch the promotional video allowing me to embellish in the amazing achievements which Getaway Girls have undertaken this past year.
Getaway Girls have achieved a great deal this year supporting 685 vulnerable girls and young women aged 11-25, delivering a number of successful projects, which are included within this year’s report. I’m always excited as to what Getaway Girls delivers, however this year I am particularly interested in how we can build on upon the new partnerships developed to drive forward an inclusive city wide project delivered through Women’s Lives Leeds designed to empower women and girls to lead healthier, safer and more fulfilled Lives.
I'm the Director of Getaway Girls. I manage the project to ensure we are making a difference for young women in Leeds.
I oversee the planning, produce the Business Plan, manage staff and resources, raise the funds, establish successful partnerships, oversee the monitoring and evaluation, ensure young women’s voice and influence is embedded within our work, produce reports and hold celebration events.
I started as a volunteer within IVS Teenage project. I loved the work so much that 35 years later I’m still involved in youth and community work.
I’ve worked in lots of different settings including community projects, drugs projects, housing support, health promotion, family support etc.
I won the NYA National Youth work Award in 2014 and was invited to the House of Commons.
I moved into managing young people’s services which I’ve been doing for the past 20 years.
I was involved at the beginning of Getaway Girls in 1987 and have watched the project grow and develop. I’ve always wanted to be the manager of Getaway Girls so I was really excited when I got the job in March 2010
I love to spend time with my two amazing grandchildren and watch them grow. I enjoy going to the theatre and love live music.
