Girls face many disadvantages and lack opportunities whilst growing up. Young women face multiple disadvantages living in Harehills and often feel isolated and face many barriers including language, support to settle in, problems accessing services, or struggling at school and face racism and many myths and stereotypes about their lives. They are also more likely to be living in poverty, to become pregnant at a younger age. Therefore they have multiple disadvantages which lead to inequalities in their life chances. Harehills, the area where Getaway Girls is based experiences some of the highest levels of multiple deprivation and is in top 5% in the country- Income Deprivation, Education, Skills/Training Deprivation, Crime and Disorder Domain. All eleven LSOAs fall within the 10% most deprived. 27% of adults claim at least 1 DWP benefit. One of the most densely populated areas in the city, 18,194 people, 130 people per hectare with overcrowding in households. There are also issues with class A drugs, gangs, domestic violence, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. 65% of population is BME, with diverse cultural and ethnic mixture with new communities including Eastern European Communities. There are over 170 different languages spoken in local schools.
