Getaway Girls have a city wide reputation of working with High Schools across Leeds. We can offer tailor made packages which generally run for a full term and can be accredited through the Open College Network (OCN), Duke of Edinburgh Award or the Rugby Skills award. Working in partnership with the schools alongside the learning mentors, enables us to listen to the needs of the school and the young women and deliver a programme which meets both their needs.
We have specialist workers in house who are able to offer a wide range of mediums which are fun but challenging such as outdoor education, sport, arts and issue based group work supporting anger management, health education and a new unit around cultural image and positive identity. As all the OCN accredited programmes delivered by our staff have been written by Getaway Girls they are designed specifically for our client group.
We are the only single gender organisation in Leeds able to offer courses which look at the first steps to learning i.e. confidence and self esteem building which provide the bedrock of further personal development in a safe and encouraging environment. |
We generally work with those young women that are experiencing difficulties with formal education. We aim to re-engage them with education through informal learning and work through some of the barriers that may have previously prevented them from reaching their full potential. Gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the end of our programmes, awarded at our ‘Presentation Events’ formally recognises their success. These events are shared with family, friends and our partners and are often highlighted in the press.
We have recently developed a new partnership with Leeds Rhinos to increase participation of young women into sports, this again is accredited. This has meant that we can offer even more programmes and extend this remit into Extended Schools.
We are able to offer informal learning as a stepping stone for future engagement with more formal education. We have a well resourced meeting room at our own premises which has proven to work well in young women’s own development. However, we are also able to bring our specialised services to the school and operate within different settings.
Many schools have fed back that they have seen a distinct improvement with attendance, confidence and attitude after attending one of our programmes.
