FIZZ for PHYSICAL ACTION
FIZZ started in September 2005 with the aim of inspiring more girls & young women to take up sports and active recreation, including adventurous activities such as climbing, kayaking, orienteering and Rugby and Football.
Sport England is funding this exciting project. Getaway Girls has a proven track record of quality sport/adventure programmes which we can now expand on by developing more creative, innovative ways of working!

We will be able to offer coherent and progressive experiences to girls & young women from ‘taster’ sessions right through to longer accredited programmes and residentials. And the experience will equip these young people to go on to national coaching and instructing awards as well as to play an active peer mentoring or volunteering role within FIZZ.
We are well aware that such activities have been highlighted by the Russell Commission and in the draft green paper ‘Youth Matters.’

There will be more on offer than a chance to be active – many issues affecting young women today can be addressed through sport and adventure. Our approach has always been inclusive and sensitive – and fun!! So barriers to involving young women of this age in active recreation are reduced.

There are not many (we don’t know of any) outdoor activity provider that offers crèche facilities, or a recognition that cultural practices are respected best by providing discreet female-only spaces. This is also true for meeting concerns relating to body size and body image and low self-esteem.
FIZZ will provide a valuable resource for all the other projects within Getaway Girls. We have always worked in partnership with agencies right across the city of Leeds and developed exciting links with other sporting bodies – joint working with Leeds Rhinos is our latest coup!
