Mum’s Work

We offer 2 support groups for young mums The group is primarily lead by the young women with support and guidance from staff members. The group so far have been involved in a wide variety of activities ranging from making baby foods, to go karting and swimming to trips out. The group also has close links with the teenage pregnancy midwife and other health professionals including health visitors who attend the group to give support and guidance around issues including weaning, potty training and teething.

In order to reach as many young women as possible we offer help with travel costs to and from the group, provide a free safe crèche for babies and children aged 3 months – 8years. We also provide a healthy dinner each week.

Mum's Accredited Work

This piece of work is also open to any pregnant young women or young mum who is interested in working on programmes of work accredited by the open college network. All the programmes will have a parenting/self development basis but will vary dependant on the need and interests of the young women involved.

Baby Reality

The ‘baby reality’ programme is designed to help young women understand some of the realities of being a parent, including the physical, emotional and financial consequences. It also helps them to understand and consider responsibilities, relationships and their personal future aspirations. These aims are met through an initial 10 weeks of group work before the young women take a baby simulator home for a weekend. (See Positive Thinking/Quotes from young women) The Baby Reality Programme is available to schools and community projects

Sexual Health Awareness Work.

we are able to offer tailored made programmes around young women’s sexual health including making positive choices, positive and negative relationships, STI’s and contraception. The content of each programme will be dependant on the need of the young women involved.

We welcome offers of partnership work, we strive to achieve positive relationships not only with the young women we work with but also other agencies across Leeds.

One to One Support

The one to one support is available for any pregnant young women or young mum who is accessing either of the above groups, where a personal issue can’t be addressed within the group work setting. Support around many issues including housing, benefits, domestic violence, depression, training and employment etc. When felt necessary we will also sign post young women to other relevant agencies and support them in accessing these too.

Young women’s confidence and wellbeing group

Young women aged 13-16 have been talking about life and everything, all the exciting and challenging things that happen to them. They have been focusing on building up their confidence and learning new skills. Some highlights have included Gym sessions, 15 young women took part in Race For Life to raise money for Breast Cancer research, motorbikes at Prince Philip Centre, Come Dine with me Challenge, Arts and Culture project with the museum focusing on Women’s lives in the past eg definitions of beauty, campaigning women. Young women have also looked at their identity as a confident young woman, and gained lots of support from each other

Support for young Women who are new to the country

This support was set up in response to young women new to the country feeling isolated especially young women who are unaccompanied refugees and asylum seekers who were referred through the CART Team within Social Care. We worked with Children’s Society to support young women during the summer and have now set up a group for young women focusing on friendship and support.

Young Women and Emotional Health Group
This is a new group for young women aged 16-25 focusing on building up friendships, confidence and resilience.
