We feel that young
women shaping our work is vital to the success of Getaway
Girls and that participation of young women is embedded in
all our work and therefore we have recently developed a Participation
Policy
Some examples of Voice & Influence work include
• TLC users forum which helps to make decisions in Getaway
Girls eg recruitment of staff, presentations, consulting with
girls and young women about issues that matter to them, facilitating
training and workshops and representing the project. TLC are
now planning to produce a DVD focusing on young women in Leeds.

•
Think Twice , a peer education project focusing on gun &
knife crime
This was set up because young women felt strongly about the
effect it was having on their community and their families.
There was a particular issue about some young women in the
area being arrested for holding guns and knives for their
boyfriends. The peer educators wrote and performed a song
and produced a DVD called “Think Twice” with ITV
Fixers. They have run workshops for young people focusing
on peer pressure, decision-making and gun and knife crime.
• Young Parents Peer support programme
The young mums started to look at ways of supporting other
young mums and began Campaign Trail where young mums have
produced resources which challenge negative images and stereotypes
of young mums in society. The next step is for them to train
as peer educators to offer workshops and Baby Reality Programme.
They will also offer support to new young mums and train to
be Youth Workers.
